The standards era has placed a strong focus on academic skills. What is developmentally appropriate and how should we be teaching literacy skills to young children? A growing body of empirical research describes the development of early literacy skills and instructional approaches for teaching them. This session focuses on developmentally appropriate learning expectations, which informs assessment processes, and effective instructional approaches that support children’s literacy development in the earliest stages of learning to read and write.
